Indications

  1. As a plasma volume expander in case of hypovolemia due to:
    1. haemorrhage
    2. acute trauma
    3. burns
    4. sepsis
    5. water & electrolytes loss in acute gastrointenstinal distrubances
    6. surgery
  2. Cardiac priming
  3. Therapeutic haemodilutions
  4. Leucapheresis

Contraindications

  1. Severe haemorrhagic defects
  2. Severe congestive cardiac failure
  3. Renal failure with oliguria and anuria
  4. Patients allergic to strach
  5. Hyperhydration states

Rate of Infusion

  1. In haemorrhagic shock: up to 20 ml/kg body weight/hour, 0.33 ml/kg body weight/minute.
  2. In septic and burn shock: rate of infusion must be lowered.
  3. In children under 10 years of age: do not exceed 15 ml/kg body weight/hour.
  4. Hemodilution: 500 ml in 4-6 hours, 2x500 ml in 8-12 hours.
